Hierarchical resource usage report

I'm getting some great value out of Yosys (and learning a lot in the process!). I'm beginning to turn to ways to optimise my designs - and would really like to be able to see where in a large project the most resources are being used.

It would be really helpful to get something like a report that indicates hierarchical resource usage by module/named element so I can see where all those cells are going and target the most wasteful parts first. However, it's not obvious how to find or generate such a report, or if it's even possible?

Provided you don't have a flattened design (i.e. you haven't called flatten), calling stat should report resource usage by module. There is some manual work involved for exactly what you're wanting, since each module only reports the number of submodules rather than the total resource usage of those modules; but it should give you some idea. Unfortunately if you're wanting resources post-optimisation then not calling flatten does limit some of the optimisations available, and (as far as I know) there isn't any built-in way to reconstruct a flattened hierarchy.
