Is it possible to make Carla portable?

In Windows, it seems that Carla doesn't need to be installed, just unzipping is enough (to use the VST version, at least), but it saves its preferences to the registry; what changes would need to be done in order to make it save its preferences to a file, maybe next to the .exe like REAPER? Carla as a fully portable host would be nice ^^

I also had this idea of using multiple instances of Cardinal within Carla to make a modular drum synth since I'd need more than 8 outputs and Cardinal only has 8...
