Using a supported version?

  • I have searched searched open and closed issues for duplicates.
  • I am using Signal-Desktop as provided by the Signal team, not a 3rd-party package.

Overall summary

Alice and Bob have enabled disappearing messages after a period of time. Alice's mobile device is permanently online, the linked desktop client only occasionally

When Alices uses Signal on her desktop computer, long after the messages were deleted on her mobile device, the desktop client downloads all the exchanged messages and deletes them immediately afterwards

Steps to reproduce

  1. Exchange messages in a conversation where "Disappearing messages" is set;
  2. Wait for the messages to disappear;
  3. Open linked desktop client;
  4. All deleted messages are being downloaded by the desktop client;
  5. Once all the messages have been downloaded, they are deleted.

Expected result

Once deleted on a device, the messages should not reappear on another linked one, just to be immediately deleted again. Signal's server should tell the desktop client "no new messages", as the "Disappearing messages" is a per-conversation setting, not a per-device setting.

Actual result

Deleted messages are being downloaded, then deleted again on linked device.
