Welcome to the FreeScan Wiki

What is FreeScan?

FreeScan is an ALDL scantool for certain GM ECU based vehicles. It originally started life as a scan tool for a 1997 Lotus Esprit 2.0 GT3 [great car]. Since the communication protocol is used by many other GM based vehicles, other protocols were added over the years by various technically minded enthusiasts (mainly from the USA).

The wizzy thing about FreeScan is that it contains a virtual dashboard giving you realtime information about you engine. This could provide a smart way of adding the code into an on-dash display giving your car a certain wow-factor as you drive. Be careful to concentrate on your driving though....

Interfacing

If your car is supported and you wish to give the software a try, you will need to get your hands on an ALDL interface (like an OBD-II one but with 5V signalling and NOT 12V like OBD-II). ALDL interfaces should be available easily or you could try a OBD-II ISO interface and modify the output to send +5V signals.

Supported Vehicles

Each vehicle has its own protocol running at 8192 baud. Any computer running Microsoft Windows greater than Windows 7 should be OK. Since the code's project is in Visual Studio 2017 Community Edition (which is free but a huge download), it is this that determines what edition of Windows operating system FreeScan will run on.
