2025 - DeDRM no longer working to convert Amazon eBooks - need new plugin created please

Hello,

I miss the good old days when this plugin worked to convert Amazon eBooks or you could successfully use other third party software like Eupobor and such. Now absolutely NONE as in 100% of all of the methods do NOT work even when a person has a legitimate SN from a physical Kindle device. Can you please create an updated plugin that works? From all of the posts I have been reading everywhere on numerous forums including the MobileRead forum the methods being suggested do not work.

When installing any of the recommended old Kindle for PC versions it forces users to update the software and if you do not update it 100% blocks the downloading of all eBooks. I use the Kindle Unlimited subscription and I like to borrow books and download them then back up My Kindle Library and then eventually return the books. I know that books can be downloaded directly from the Amazon website in the library in your account but when using the Kindle Unlimited subscription it does not allow for those books to be downloaded, you are only able to download books you paid for, so that method does not work for me.

Update to DeDRM 10.0.9, install the KFX Input plugin, and download books with Kindle for PC 2.4.0. Make sure to block updates for Kindle for PC.

If I have the DeDRM_tools_7.2.1 version plugin installed into Calibre do I need to remove it or can I just install version 10.0.9 and leave the previous version installed? Thank you……. You can just install. Restart calibre after installing the plugins.

Oh, one other thing – I am not able to get the bat file that disables the Kindle For PC from updating to execute successfully. I get this error message which I think is because of how much of a well organized PC I keep for files and programs. I don’t have the Kindle software installed in the default location because I have 2 different versions installed and to keep them easily distinguishable I customized the app’s name to be Kindle (Current Version.exe). I did try noodling around with a copy of the bat file to read the name I changed the app to but no matter what I do to the modified version of the bat file it will not execute successfully. I am not versed in anything like scripting languages or the creation of bat files so I suspect that it is a case of I don’t have the tech skills to modify the bat file properly. If you want me to provide you with any screenshots or even the modified version of the bat file let me know. All help you can give me is appreciated. I installed the DeDRM version you provided and I still am not able to convert my books to PDF in Calibre. Manually do what the bat file does. Go to where Kindle for PC is installed. For me that's C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Amazon\Kindle (probably the default)
If there's an updates folder, delete it. Create a new text file named updates without the txt extension. That's it. Now when it tries to download the update, it won't be able to put anything there or create a folder with that name.

I just double checked the location for the current version of the app and I just saw that I also customized the folder location it is installed in. It is in C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Local\Amazon\Kindle Current Version\Kindle\Application and then the .exe file name is Kindle (Current Version).exe and in that location there is no Updates folder. Back up one folder to the Kindle folder that contains the Application folder and put the updates txt file there. If there isn't an updates folder, that's good -- it hasn't tried to create one yet.

Under the Preferences drop down menu, Restart in debug mode. Once it restarts, add a book and close calibre. The log will open and you can copy and paste it here.

It's not finding the right key. I'd guess because you have or had an old version in the default location. If you have an E-ink Kindle, you could import books from there. Leave them in their original folder structure. Make sure you have the Kindle's serial number correctly entered in DeDRM's customization.

What I have been doing is downloading my books to my PC (I am on Win11 Pro) and then copying the entire My Kindle Content folder and pasting it somewhere else on my computer and then renaming that backup folder. As for the SN for my Kindle device that I entered into the plugin here’s everything. Can you tell me if I entered the SN incorrectly? Is it supposed to be entered into the plugin including the spaces? The serial number only works with books from or for an E-ink Kindle. For books from Kindle for PC, DeDRM locates and decrypts the key for that installation of the app. DeDRM should strip spaces out if needed, but I recommend copy and paste the serial number from the devices page on the website. They don't have spaces there.

Here’s the SN I copied from my Amazon account and a screenshot of it on my Amazon account. I entered the SN from my ancient Kindle Paperwhite into the Kindle eInk ebooks category, is that the correct category or was I supposed to pick the category Kindle for Mac/PC ebooks? I just tried to open that category to enter the SN but when I clicked on the “+” it gives me an error message and I also don’t know where to import the key from when using the import key option. Can't see screenshots. But don't worry about it. Yes, the serial number gets added to the Kindle eInk ebooks area. That will work to create a key for books pulled from your Paperwhite (or books downloaded from the website for download & transfer via usb for that Kindle. D&T will no longer be available Feb 26.). DeDRM is unable to find the key for books from your current installation of Kindle for PC. Looks like it's picking up an old key from an older installation. Not really sure how to resolve that. Might need to start from scratch for that. The import key in DeDRM's customization is for a key you've previously saved from DeDRM.

What you just said made me realize something. I don’t use my Kindle Paperwhite at all anymore and haven’t used it in easily 10 to 15 years maybe, so I am not transferring anything from it via USB. I only use the Kindle for PC. Does that make a difference? I only entered the SN because I thought it might help me be able to convert my eBooks to PDF again. The above being said, in the category of Kindle For PC where can I find the key file to import into the plugin? When I click on the “+” it doesn’t find it on it’s own and when I try to import it I don’t know where to navigate to so I can locate it. DeDRM is unable to get the key for Kindle for PC from your current setup. Importing is only if for some reason you had a key previously saved from DeDRM which you needed to add.

I think the last thing for me to try and it’s because it’s the only thing left, is to uninstall the modern version the current version and reinstall it, allowing it to install itself however it does by default and to not try to customize the installation, location nor rename The executable file.  I’m going to do this and I am thinking that it might not be able to get the key because I messed with the installation default.  I will make a copy of my current Kindle content folder as a back up and then go ahead and uninstall and reinstall without modifying anything. Thanks for your help here! I was unable to DeDRM my two purchased books I downloaded directly from the Amazon website. But I was successful with the files I downloaded within the Kindle for Windows app and now have my purchased books free to read where I see fit.
