I have tested the changes you have made to the particle handler and it turns out that the previous solution was purely "semi-working" because of luck. Since the mesh was relatively structured and nice, using geometry info lead to a bad position, but that still lead to visually "ok" results.
Your PR fixed a bug.
Consequently, have verification, I have just updated the test results to your new results. The implementation you propose is the correct one.
