Rust doesn’t really have a single “member access” operator, but two different operators both using the “.” token as syntax. Using the same terminology as the Rust Reference will help reduce confusion. The book does not use the phrase “member access” elsewhere, so this should not be adding any inconsistency.

I also added a row for the function call operator since it would be odd to have method calls but not function calls in the table. Function calls are technically also mentioned in the “Tuples” table, but that’s an odd place to look for them. I don’t consider this a necessary part of this PR, though.

Rust doesn’t have a single “member access” operator, but two different operators both using the dot.

Today I learned! This is good to have aligned, yep. Also, it is very odd that we put all the parenthesized forms under “tuples”. If you’re all right with my updating this branch, I’m going to keep these changes and make sure further tweaks here:

  • Moving tuple indexing to live alongside field access.
  • Renaming Table B-8 to “Parentheses” and updating its description accordingly.

That will align that table with the ones that immediately follow it and combine the one thing currently in the “tuples” section that is not related to parentheses with the fix you just made here.

@chriskrycho That all sounds good.

While thinking about brackets I also notice that use<> isn’t mentioned, but that’s not exactly a topic for this PR.

@kpreid very good – I’ll push those updates later, and I’ll also make a note to get use<> in there (a good thing to make sure is present for this print edition update!).

In Table B-8, instead of treating “tuples” as the primary concern, treat
parentheses as primary and tuples as one of the contexts. Move the tuple
index access to live alongside field and method access.
