It's very critical that this build.rs
is always executed even if the napi
crate did not change.
That was a bug in the past and has led to corrupted persistent cache.

I added this logging in line 46 to test that.

The include_untracked
argument passed to dirty helps to ensure that, plus it emits the stuff described here (which includes .git/HEAD
): https://docs.rs/vergen-git2/latest/vergen_git2/index.html
As the comment block above states, there's an edge case where we may not detect a newly-dirty repository, but because this is the top-level crate, that would mean that none of the changed files are depended on by the binary, so it shouldn't really matter?
I think the problems that occurred before were related to shadow-rs
being used on a non-top-level crate?
I could add hack here (like the one shadow-rs
has for --release
builds) to always force a rebuild, but that's going to contribute to a bad development experience, and I don't think it's necessary.
For CI (the most important place to get this right), the dependency on .git/HEAD
should be enough, as the commit hash will always change between unique CI runs.

The tag thing didn't work in CI. I think we only do a shallow clone without tags, so that's broken.

I tested this by changing the matches
parameter to something that won't match and using cargo check -vv
(which shows the output of build.rs
) and I get:
cargo:rustc-env=VERGEN_GIT_DESCRIBE=b3c374d-dirty
Git falls back to just using the short commit hash, which is the same as what your code was previously doing when LAST_TAG
didn't resolve.
Both
shadow-rs
andvergen-gitcl
call out to the git CLI, which takes optional locks to update the index: https://git-scm.com/docs/git-status#_background_refreshThis is why we sometimes find ourselves with stale
.git/index.lock
files.Using a lightly patched version of https://github.com/martinpitt/fatrace (to look up parent process names) shows this:
shadow-rs
has agit2
feature (enabled by default), but that doesn't prevent it from running the git CLI. Instead it runs both and overwrites some values.vergen-git2
only useslibgit2
and does not invoke the CLI. This fixes things becauselibgit2
disablesGIT_STATUS_OPT_UPDATE_INDEX
by default.Additionally, after looking through both codebases, I've decided I like
vergen
's implementation a bit more thanshadow-rs
's.Supposedly,
git
's command-line should support aGIT_OPTIONAL_LOCKS=0
environment variable to disable this behavior, but I'm still finding the lock written to when trying to use that. I'm still investigating if I can use something like this to contribute a proper fix upstream to these crates.
